Apple OS vs. Android

I'm interested to hear people's take on comparing Apple's OS vs Google's Android OS. I've been fortunate enough to experience both. My introduction was to the HTC Eris on VZW's 3G network. This was one of VZW's first Android smartphones. I have to say, I was very impressed with the Android OS. It was very easy to use and to maneuver around. The application store (Android Marketplace) at the time, was alittle light on apps, but month by month, the number of selections were increasing exponentially. Of course now, the Android market is chock full of applications. My only real complaint was the lack of the "pinch" capability to shrink and enlarge the screen size. I believe this issue has been resolved in later release of the OS.

On the other hand, Apple is the best in the world when it comes to User Interfaces. All my kids have iPod Touches and I've been using the iPad2. The OS and application store are both excellent. They make the user experience much more valuable. This is no knock on Android.

Honestly, both OS's are very good. the big difference is that in order to use the Apple OS, you're tied into the Apple device. On the otherhand, Android allows you to select a device from one of many many vendors (Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC, ....). That's why you'll see more Android devices in the marketplance, simply based on the many platforms that it can run on. I guess it really comes down to whether or not your on the Apple band wagon or not. Those that have Macbooks at home will most likely levitate to the iPhones.

As I said, I'm pretty torn. I'm right now anxiously waiting for the iPhone5 to come out on the VZW network to upgrade my Blackberry to the new Apple platform. Even though I don't have any Apple computers in my house, I guess I'm leaning towards the Apple OS. If it makes you feel any better, my wife has an Android based smartphone which she loves, so you can see, my household is very flexible on this topic.

I'd love to hear what you think on this debate. Have you experienced certain applicatons that work better on one OS than the other? Let us know!!!

Thanks

  1. In the tablet wars, Apple's ipad is winning by a landslide. Others just can't seem to compete, just on price alone. This was evident by the fact that just this week, HP dropped the price of their brand new tablet by 20%. The only reason they would do this is to stay competitive in their battle agains Apple's ipad's. Obviously, sales of the new HP tablets were not going as well as expected so HP needed to do something fast. Granted, the HP tablet is not Android, but I think we're seeing similar stories regarding the Android tablets. In the case of HP, chalk up another for Apple.

  2. From a tablet standpoint, Apple has this market licked with their iPad. Other can't come close to matching what they offer, especially for the price points.

  3. Missed out on a great opportunity to purchase an HP Touchpad for $99. After HP announced they were stopping support of Web OS, fire sales started on the HP Touchpad as stores dropped the prices to $99. I went all over the place trying to get one but all the major stores sold out almost immediately. Would have been a decent device for simply surfing the web, doing email, and facebook. As for apps, not a good purchase but it definitely would have served a purpose. To slow to react!!!

  4. Android is a great OS with lots of free apps. That being said, I'm holding out for an Apple iPhone5. That Apple OS has me pretty impressed even though I'd still be very happy with an Android device.

  5. IOS5 was released this week and we have 4 devices in my house now updated to the new Apple OS. I haven't had alot of time to play with it yet but what I've seen so far is pretty nice. My youngest son is ecstatic with it. I really need to spend some more time with iCloud to better understand it but if others out there are using it, I'd love to hear your experience.

    Thanks!!
